
Zack Schwartz is the Acting Chief Information Officer for the Department of Commerce Office of the Secretary. Prior to assuming this role in August 2022, Mr. Schwartz served as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary and led the Department’s COVID-19 Coordination Team. In this capacity, Mr. Schwartz was responsible for driving and coordinating DOC’s pandemic response and operation activities to ensure a strategic and measured approach to implementing workplace health and safety guidelines across the bureaus. Mr. Schwartz and his team also played an active role in collaborating with airline, cruise, and hospitality leaders to address the estimated $4 trillion in global travel and tourism losses.
Prior to joining the Office of the Secretary, Mr. Schwartz held the permanent role of Division Chief for the Census Bureau’s Information Technology Services Management Office. As Division Chief, he oversaw the CIO’s acquisition, budget, program management, and administrative areas.
Mr. Schwartz also served as the Deputy Division Chief of the Trust & Safety program within the Census Bureau’s communications directorate, where he was responsible for delivering critical systems and applications in support of digital marketing, customer outreach, and social listening in support of the 2020 Census. In this role, he coordinated national partnership efforts with major technology and social media companies, civil societies, and consumer advocacy groups to protect the 2020 Census and the American public from mis- and disinformation.
His private sector work experience includes strategy consulting at Deloitte supporting a wide array of senior Fortune 500 executives on key initiatives. He received his B.A. in Business Administration from American University and is also a fully sworn reserve police officer for the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.
